For as far as I can remember, Astons chains of restaurants have been around in our local food scene for the past many years. I reckon Astons can be considered a rather popular food hideout for those who are into decent and quality western cuisine.
I decided to re-visit Astons Specialities having last tried their food a couple of years ago.
Many might not be aware that Astons first started operations in a kopitiam at East Coast Road, widely popular for its really decent food at fair prices. Since 2005, Astons has opened numerous branches across the island with 10 Specialities stores offering western cuisine at affordable prices, 17 Express outlets in various coffeeshops (yeah, retaining it’s roots!) all over Singapore and 1 Astons Prime restaurant to cater for those who want a full dining experience.
The man behind the chain of restaurants is no other than Mr. Aston Soon, who bravely quit his job as a chef to venture out into building his own F&B empire, of which he regards most of his success comes from his supporting customers.
Regulars of Astons Specialities wouldn’t find it unusual to find most of the stores’ customers usually range from young students to young working adults. It has always been that way for the past few years, presumably due to the really affordable prices yet decent tasty western food.
Most of Astons Specialities main course come with 2 side dishes for customers to choose from. For those who are into Spaghettis would also get a Soup of the Day at no extra cost.
I like the option to choose, simply for the fact that should I not like certain items on the plate I can opt for something that crave for or prefer.
The Chargrilled Chicken & Sausage Combo is for those who have a big appetite. What you have here is a generous piece of well-grilled, juicy and tender chicken topped with the restaurant’s special sauce. Also comes with 5 pieces of grilled sausages, I chose the French Fries and Onion Rings to complete the meal. The entire portion is ideal for sharing for two small eaters in my opinion!
Grilled Fish with Herbs with Garden Veggies and Pasta Salad ($8.50)
Topped with a rather creamy and thick herb sauce, the Grilled Fish is just as well grilled as the Chargrill Chicken. The fish is decently fresh and holds well together. I chose some greens (Garden Veggies) with Pasta Salad to fill up the plate which tasted really good with just an additional dash of salt and pepper.
Creamy, thick and really delicious. The mushroom soup comes with 2 slices of garlic bread which really complements the soup.
IBC Root Beer ($2.80)
If you like root beer, why not try out the IBC Root Beer? Personally I like the overall sweetness as compared to other brands of root beer beverages. It doesn’t belong to those “creamy” type of root beer and is fairly high on carbonation. Try it and you might like it too!
Every once in a while I would want to come back to Astons Specialities to fix that western cuisine craving. I can’t really fault the food here given the reasonable prices across the entire menu offerings. In short, I’m sure Astons Specialities will be around in the local food scene for a long time to come.
