Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar @ one-north

In the midst of serenity and greenery, right at the corner of one-north Residences is where Jimmy Monkey Cafe & Bar is situated and boy we adore this place! Away from the rustle and hustle of the busy streets, this cozy cafe is popular among residents of the nearby wessex and one-north area. We’ve heard the owner, Mr. Michael Ryan (extremely friendly guy I must say) opened this cafe to spread his love for coffee. So is this just another cafe around the block or there’s more to it?

Let’s find out.

Before you step into the cafe, expected to be greeted by the cute monkey mascot (whose name is jimmy, apparently) at the door (and look out around the cafe, he’s on the wall as well)

We absolutely love the cosy settings here. This is really one venue which you can simply bring your books or i-whatever-devices, order a cup of coffee and spend some quality time to yourself without having much distractions around you.

Well, you pretty much DIY when it comes to helping yourself because there’s no service charge here (which is something we like for sure). Want a glass of water? Grab some glasses with bottles of water available right beside the counter and help yourself to it.

Menus are readily placed on each available table and all you have to do is to decide on what you want, proceed to the cashier, pay up and wait by your table.  Trust us when we say that you will have a tough time thinking of what to order because each item on the menu comes with short yet concise description of what would be served on your plate.

Here’s what caught our eyes

Mr Benedict with Toasted English Muffin, Leg Ham, Poached eggs and Hollandaise Sauce ($14) (told you the menu descriptions were right on!)

To be honest I have no idea what hollandaise cream was until I tried this dish. A quick lookup reveals that it’s the emulsion of both egg yolk and butter. The texture is somewhat like cheese and I must say I love this emulsion to bits not only it’s delicious but it really compliments the ham and muffin very well. I never expect the simple combination of poached eggs, ham and muffin can be made so much better with the hollandaise sauce. The poached eggs are pretty well done but I would prefer the egg yolks to be abit more…erm less well-cooked.

Breakfast Sandwich – Rocket, Bacon, Egg, Roma Tomato, Avocado & Kay’s relish ($12) with additional Smoked Salmon ($6)

Open up, Open up..!

Thick, fluffy and wholesome bread paired with ham and generous servings of eggs and greens. If you are looking for something that is healthy yet fills the stomach, this is probably it. The avocado and greens are definitely fresh but we reckon the add-on Smoked Salmon could be served in a much more generous portion, especially when it costs an additional $6.

Breakfast Set that comes with eggs of any style and toasts and any 3 optional sides ($18). Above, Poached eggs with Rocket, Sausages and Bacon Strips

Toasts with Scrambed Eggs with Salmon, Shrooms and Bacon Strips ($18).
Warning, the Shrooms here are extremely addictive!

Orange Juice ($6)

Cappucino ($5)

Nothing beats a huge cup of aromatic coffee in the morning, particularly so when you  pair it with your breakfast. Our pick for the morning – Cappucino served with delicious biscotti. Being in a “cafe” where perhaps coffee holds more “power” than the rest of the menu items, I don’t expect the coffee to disappoint and I was right!

I would usually take a sip of the Cap to try and taste if it would be too “bitter” and in most circumstances it would and I would add in additional satchet of sugar just to make it a better cup but the Cap here is so perfectly blended, I can simply drink it as-is. In true Italian-sense, the Cappucino should be consumed before and not after a meal but really, I don’t care about that. I just want to enjoy the coffee as long as I possible can. Oh, see that biscotti? Don’t miss that at all cost either.

Piccolo Latte ($5)

Macchiato ($5)

Molten Chocolate Lava Cake with Berry Compote and Vanilla Ice Cream

Soft, moist, warm and very delicious. Complete your meal with this heavenly dessert that is rich in chocolate (which make us very happy) and the vanilla ice cream and berries compliment the cake very well.

This is where the magic happens. A huge coffee grinding machine in-da-house! Oh yes, you can also purchase freshly grinded coffee beans here.

Just in case you are not aware, the coffee machine used here goes by the brand name “Slayer” aka the Ferrari of Coffee Machines. This is one expensive, custom-made coffee machine which probably proves that Michael really knows his stuffs!

While we were enjoying our breakfast we noticed Michael would go from table to table and mingle, having chit-chats with his customers. This is something that we really love to see more from the local food scene, particularly community-serving cafes like Jimmy Monkey. We consider the food here to be slightly expensive for some items on the menu but in general, we have no questions on the overall quality and taste of the food. Certainly not the best but definitely not bad either. What we love most about this place is the extreme coziness of the cafe. If you love coffee, it’s definitely a must to try their various coffee selections here. There’s a lot more on Jimmy Monkey’s menu that we would love to try and with that said, we know we will be back over and over again. To us, the way we see it would be that Jimmy Monkey is not just another cafe but more importantly, a venue where the local community could come by to have a chat and bond with one another.
